Root Canal Treatment and Extractions

Our dentists make dentistry convenient for busy families in Melville by offering advanced services without the need for a referral to a specialist. Our dentists are experienced in both root canal therapy and oral surgery extractions to eliminate toothache, painful symptoms and problematic wisdom teeth.

Pain-Free Dentistry

Both root canals and tooth extractions cause anxiety for some patients. Not only are our dentists gentle with patient care, but they also offer sedation dentistry options to provide stress-free procedures and use the latest rotary instruments for fast and precise root canal treatment.

Root Canals Save Natural Teeth

Root canals are a tooth-saving procedure to prevent extraction in the event of infection inside the canal of the tooth.

Many people avoid root canals because they have an unfair reputation for feeling painful. Root canals actually relieve pain and can prolong the life of the natural tooth. Saving natural teeth is the most affordable and conservative solution to protect oral health and the appearance of the smile.

Often, the first symptoms of infection include pain and inflammation. Other signs that point to the need for root canal treatment include tooth discolouration, a small hole or lesion on the gums, and swelling of the face or jaw.

An exam and x-ray will be necessary to determine if root canal treatment is necessary. We will explain each diagnosis and the treatments available.

Root Canal Procedure

After completely anaesthetising the tooth to remove any pain, Dr Lidia or Dr Anni will use modern rotary instruments to clean the infection, pulp (tissue), and damaged nerve fibres from the canal of the tooth. Placing medication and filling the canal will promote healing and prevent re-infection.

Once the pulp is removed, the tooth lacks blood supply and becomes more brittle. In many cases, we recommend a dental crown to prevent damage and fracture.

Our clinic offers both tooth-coloured crowns and full gold crowns to protect root canal teeth.

Dental Extractions

Though we strive to save natural teeth whenever possible, sometimes an extraction is the only solution to diseased, damaged or symptomatic wisdom teeth. Our dentists are experienced in all types of tooth extractions.

  • Primary (deciduous) teeth
  • Permanent adult teeth
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Standard and surgical extractions

Wisdom teeth often become painful and press against adjacent teeth, causing teeth to shift. In some cases, lack of adequate space prevents the wisdom teeth from erupting through the gums, causing a condition called impaction.

We include wisdom teeth evaluation for teens and young adults as part of our preventive dentistry programme.

Replacing Missing Teeth

Except for wisdom teeth, we offer tooth-replacement options to protect your oral health and smile.

  • Bridges
  • Dental implants
  • Dentures and partial dentures
  • Implant dentures

Our dentists will always present all treatment options so you can make the best choice for your own smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Root canals are designed to get you out of pain, not to cause pain. Essentially, the root canal procedure should be the same experience for the patient as a filling appointment, only slightly longer.

We make every procedure painless and comfortable by using gentle anaesthetic techniques to numb the tooth and nerve before we begin. Because the symptoms of an infected root canal cause inflammation and pain, patients have long associated the procedure with discomfort. We would like to reassure you that you will feel much better after root canal treatment.

Your Meliville dentist will use the latest titanium rotary endodontic instruments to reduce treatment time and provide greater accuracy. Rather than files, small, flexible rotary tips gently remove infected tissue and bacteria from the canals within the tooth.

Your dentist will then place medication to assist your body in the healing process. It is common to feel slight sensitivity for a few days as inflammation decreases. We will then arrange a follow-up visit to check healing and discuss reinforcing your tooth with the proper restoration. Typically, a dental crown will prevent your tooth from fractures.

For gentle root canal procedures from our experienced Melville Family Dental team, we welcome you to contact us. We treat dental emergencies.

When we examine your teeth, we explain to you, what our findings are, how we recommend to proceed, and what the different steps will be. We listen to your worries, and with the range of possibilities, we provide, we find the best way to get through this procedure together.

Our patients appreciate the convenience and comfort of having oral surgery in our Melville dental clinic with a clinical team who has the experience and gentle chairside manner necessary to make surgery a success – both emotionally and physically.
