Sedation Dentistry

If you feel anxious about dental visits and postpone appointments for longer than you should, you are not alone. Many of our patients have shared past negative experiences that cause them to feel nervous or fearful about the dental surgery.

Why Avoiding Your Dentist Puts Your Health at Risk

We can help you have the dental treatment you need to stay healthy and relaxed in our Melville dental clinic. Avoiding treatment could be putting your oral health at risk. Dental conditions and oral diseases often do not become symptomatic until they progress into advanced stages.

Because we never want you to feel anxious while we look after your smile, we offer both oral sedation dentistry and IV sedation dentistry, making it possible for even the most fearful patients to have a comfortable, stress-free experience.

Looking after Anxious Patients

Our kind and reassuring team helps our patients feel at ease. Our dentists' are gentle and reassuring to make our patients feel more comfortable.

Some patients require assistance to relax, which is why we offer sedation dentistry at Melville Family Dental.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation dentistry utilises prescription medication to induce relaxation and reduce anxiety. Your dentist will review your medical history to rule out any pharmaceutical interactions and conditions to ensure your safety.

You will take your medication approximately one hour prior to your procedure. As you relax, we will closely monitor your vital signs for a safe, worry-free experience.

Many patients report little to no memory of their treatment, though they remain conscious and able to respond to our staff.

IV Sedation Dentistry

For patients who want deeper relaxation, IV sedation allows us to control the level of sedation throughout your procedure.

For patients with extreme anxiety or who have arranged lengthy procedures such as full smile makeovers or full mouth reconstruction, IV sedation works best because it is longer lasting.

Both types of sedation require you to have a trusted friend or family member drive you home from your appointment, as you will still feel groggy afterwards. It’s best to relax at home for the rest of the day.

Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry?

In addition to alleviating fear and stress, sedation dentistry also makes it possible for patients with a strong gag reflex to have their treatment without discomfort or embarrassment.

Some patients have difficulty feeling completely numb. Stress responses can interfere with the effectiveness of anaesthetic or cause it to wear off too quickly. Sedation dentistry makes it possible for patients to feel completely numb and enjoy a pain-free visit.

Tired of Putting Off Your Smile?

We designed a patient-friendly atmosphere where we invite you to relax while we look after your dental health. Sedation dentistry will take away the fear and help you get the dental care you need for a healthy, attractive smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental anxiety is a common problem for many patients, and it can actually prevent you from seeking the preventive dental care necessary to avoid serious oral health complications and toothache.

Having a fear of the dentist or dental clinic has serious negative health consequences. Our dentists' compassionate natures inspired them to find a solution for all patients – even our most fearful ones – to have healthy smiles.

Sedation dentistry reduces anxiety and increases wellbeing while you are in the chair. We offer both oral sedation and IV sedation dentistry to help patients relax while we look after their smiles.

Sedation dentistry uses medication, either oral or intravenous, to create a relaxed feeling for the duration of your procedure. Though patients remain conscious and can respond to the dentist and our staff, they report having little or no recollection of their procedure, which removes their stress entirely.

Sedation dentistry also helps patients feel completely numb and reduces the urge to gag, which also keeps some patients from seeking treatment. For lengthy procedures, such as full smile makeovers or full mouth rehabilitation, sedation medication makes visits seem quick and easy.
